Multiple Intelligences & BUGS
By Evie Boss
Naturalist:
The whole point of this approach is to use models, games and songs to help students relate to the "real thing".
The naturalist is one who recognizes, appreciates, and understands the natural world. So get the kids outside...
- Tie in with mathematical by measuring how high (or far) a grasshopper jumps and relating its size to your
own… how high (or far) would you be able to jump?
- Tie in with intrapersonal: journal of how you interacted with bugs before. Keep a diary of insect
observations.
- Tie in with interpersonal: have the class raise crickets, mealworms, or butterflies in the classroom. Chart
their growth, food preferences…(visual, mathematical)
- Experiment with which kind of soap (or detergent) spray works the best for stopping the scent tracks of ants?
Visual:
- Draw pictures of actual insects or models. Note differences in mouths, antennae, wings…
- Map the location of ant hills in a section of the school yard.(mathematical)
Body/Kinesthetic:
- Imagine you are a bug about to be stepped on… what would you want the owner of that big foot to know about you?
- Take a bug name and using its letters describe its characteristics...
A – annoying
N – nuisance
T – tiny
- If you could be any insect, what one would you be and why?
Music:
DUH, buy my CD's...okay, take familiar tunes and have students right insect songs like to "I'm a Little Teapot":
I'm a little Bumble Bee, buzzing around.
It is amazing I can get off the ground.
I fly to the flowers for nectar to eat,
Attracted to the ones that smell so sweet.
